I love cows, but I’m allergic to milk.
I love cows. I love the way they look, their big noses, the way they chew and wander a pasture all day. But the irony is, I am very allergic to milk. I recently had a blood test that showed I have the highest immune response to cow’s milk. I have known this all along, as all milk products make me feel sick, but the test proved it.
Do we really need a test to prove that something is biological or genetic to stop?
Is your job something you are attracted to and either right away, or after years, you started to have a reaction and now it makes you sick? Whether physically or mentally, you at least know that feeling of dread. It may surface during a meeting, an occasional shift or every day.
I’m not a doctor or a therapist, but I am a career coach with 30 years navigating careers for myself and others. Does loving cows, but being allergic to them resonate with you? If so, I believe most of you need to either:
admit that the career you were attracted to is not what you need
or you have already admitted it and need to move past what you perceive as a failure (when it likely is not, more often just a path to what is next)
or you are simply too burned out to make a move
If you want to take a small step to feel less “sick” today, think of a different role or career that you are attracted to.
Write it down.
Make it real.
Then each day, add to this note. Then, one day, make the move.
I love dogs and I’m not allergic to dander.
